My second baby was born with really bad infant reflux. For a couple of months, the only way to sooth his pain and stop him from constant crying was to hold him upright. And yes, just in case you wondered: this includes during the night, when I was dozing off propped on pillows.
But I am a believer of good things coming out of bad situations. All of this sitting around, holding the baby and not being able to use my hands led to something great. I discovered podcasts!
And now that my baby outgrew this difficult period, podcasts remained part of my life. I listen to them in so many situations- when cooking, driving, loading the dishwasher, taking a walk. As for most moms, multitasking is means of survival for me. So thanks to podcasts I am learning something new even when doing mundane chores.
And it should come as no surprise that my most favourite ones are the health and fitness podcasts.
I realized I am listening to so many lately that it is about time to do a roundup of the best health and fitness podcasts.
1.The most relatable one – B for Better Health podcast
Listening to Baraa’s podcast is like talking to your best friend. Her love for health and fitness is contagious. And she spills the beans on topics that you will usually not find in other podcasts. Especially those created by famous Instagram influencers. Such as: “Do fitness influencers bloat” and “Are your period cravings real?”.
Her podcast is a great mix of monologues on topics she researched, interviews with other health and fitness professionals and answering questions from her large Instagram community. In fact you can send a voice DM to Baraa on Instagram and there is a high chance your question will be featured in the podcast. You can find her at Baraa El Sabbagh.
2. The most entertaining one – Mind Pump podcast
I have to admit – I am not sure if I listen to Sal, Adam and Justin because of all the useful advice on fitness and nutrition or because they are so fun. The podcast’s format is friends chatting and joking around while debunking major myths about the fitness industry.
With more than 1,800 episodes to date, there is a lot of great content to binge on. Which is exactly what I did when I discovered it in the beginning of the year.
The guys are straight talkers which you will immediately spot from titles such as: “Why you shouldn’t ask your doctor about diet and exercise” and “Worst fitness myths that keep people out of the gym”.
I also often head to the Mind Pump YouTube channel. Especially, if I want to learn the proper way to perform an exercise.
The show is addictive. You have been warned!
3.The most scientific one – Zoe Science and Nutrition podcast
The Zoe podcast is my newest find. I am still catching up on the episodes I missed. What I like the most is that the guests are scientists and the discussions revolve around research findings. But listening to their conversations is light and enjoyable. Even for ordinary folks like you and me who don’t have a degree in nutritional science.
4. The ultimate (protein) boss lady – The Dr. Gabrielle Lyon Show podcast
In a world where everyone is trying to be painfully politically correct, Dr. Lyon is a breath of fresh air. She is on the forefront of promoting animal protein and her muscle-centric medical approach. She is not afraid to stand her ground on these controversial topics.
It comes as no surprise that I am such a fan of her work. Discovering the power of lean protein literally changed my life. I transformed from a serial dieter to a happy person in a balanced relationship with food. You can read more about it in “How to get fit by eating more, not less“.
Her own show is a baby in the world of podcasts (it was only launched in May, 2022). But she was a guest to so many famous podcasts (and yes I have listened to all of them!). Just type Dr. Gabrielle Lyon in the search bar on Spotify and you are in for a treat.
She is also very active on Instagram and shares lots of useful advice on the importance of muscle. Especially for those of us in our 30s and beyond. You can find her at drgabriellelyon.
Happy listening!
